€500 Cost of Disability payment falls short of what disabled people need
Inclusion Ireland has welcomed the recognition of the additional costs faced by disabled people in Budget 2027, but says the announced €500 Cost of Disability payment is not enough.
The payment amounts to just €9.62 per week.
Inclusion Ireland had called for a permanent Cost of Disability payment that reflects the real and ongoing extra costs faced by disabled people.
Derval McDonagh, CEO of Inclusion Ireland, said:
“It is positive that Government has finally recognised the additional cost of disability, but €500 a year does not reflect the reality facing disabled people and families. These costs are not once off, so the response cannot be once-off either. We now need a clear commitment to a meaningful, permanent Cost of Disability payment.”
Inclusion Ireland will await further detail at the Department of Social Protection conference later today.
Inclusion Ireland will be analysing the full Budget 2027 disability measures today against its four key asks: independent living and housing, the Cost of Disability, supports for children and families, and inclusive education.
