Seminar 23 June 2011

The first Inclusion Ireland seminar exploring the issues related to parenting and intellectual disability took place on Thursday 23 June 2011.

The focus of the first seminar was the issue of capacity.

Dr Fintan Sheerin of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College, Dublin, discussed how women with an intellectual disability are viewed and treated in Irish society with regard to pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood. Dr Sheerin part of a research team that produced a recent study in this subject.

Sarah Lennon of Inclusion Ireland introduced the audience to the concept of capacity. Sarah’s presentation covered the issues of consent and capacity and examined the current situation in Ireland and the work of Inclusion Ireland is advocating for legislative reform in the area.

The other speaker on the day was Dr Ann Moore Asgharian, a Senior Clinical Psychologist. Dr Anna spoke about the various approaches to assessing parental capacity from a psychological perspective and provided examples from her own professional experience.

Future seminars will include perspectives from parents; legal professionals; social workers; advocates and others. The next seminar will take place in late September 2011.
