INCLUSION IRELAND WELCOMES BREASTCHECK INFORMATION GUIDE FOR WOMEN WITH AN INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY & URGES OTHER HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS TO FOLLOW SUIT
Inclusion Ireland, the National Association for People with an Intellectual Disability, welcomes BreastCheck’s launch of an information guide about breast screening for women with intellectual disabilities, but urges others to follow suit. Inclusion Ireland CEO Deirdre Carroll said: “Given the lower health status among those with an intellectual disability, it is imperative that healthcare providers become more accessible”.
“Appropriate access to general health information is vital for both men and women with an intellectual disability and the imbalance which currently exists in accessing healthcare information must be rectified. Given the lower level of health among those with an intellectual disability, access to information is vital. People with an intellectual disability must have the same access to information on healthcare as the general population, as this will lead to greater access to, and utilisation of, health services.
“The initiative taken by BreastCheck and other healthcare providers in producing accessible information is to be applauded but they are still in the minority. I urge others to take account of this problem and ensure information on their services is accessible.”
