Local and European Elections 2009

- Your Doorstep Guide to Putting the Needs of People with a Disability on their Agenda!

The Local and European Elections will take place on 5th June 2009. Given the current economic times, Inclusion Ireland believes it is more important now than ever before that all politicians keep disability issues high on their agenda. Whether the politician is working in Europe, in Dáil Éireann or in your local city, town or county council, they must understand that disability issues should be a priority.

Politicians are your representative: they must ensure there are no further cutbacks to the disability sector

People with a disability and their families were one of the first groups hit by Budget cuts - special needs education has suffered serious setbacks in recent months and we have been told that the carers strategy won’t be published and there will be no independent inspection of residential services. There are also serious concerns that young people leaving school and rehabilitative training services may have nowhere to go in June.

Your vote can make a difference

– Your voice can change a politician’s priorities

The needs of people with a disability and their families are not seen as a political priority at the moment. We need to change that. Disability issues were often neglected in good economic times. We need to fight together to ensure we are not forgotten in the hard times.

Inclusion Ireland has produced a ‘Doorstep Guide’ for you and your family to use when politicians and their canvassing teams knock on your door looking for your vote. Please use this guide to make sure your vote keeps disability issues on the local, national and European agenda of your political representatives.
