Last December, against a background of a strongly performing economy, Inclusion Ireland welcomed a number of the new provisions by the Government in Budget 2007 in particular changes in the social welfare system which targeted poor households and people with disabilities and their carers.
This year, with a less favourable economic forecast, it is imperative that the Government continues to make brave changes in order to meet the commitments outlined in the National Disability Strategy, The Social Partnership Agreement “Towards 2016” and more recently The National Action Plan for Social Inclusion.
The full inclusion of people with disabilities in Irish life must continue to be a priority for the Government in 2008. The ratification in 2008 by the Irish Government of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities would be an important indication of the Government’s commitment to people with disabilities and their families in Ireland
